Description
Located in Engelberg, Switzerland, the Fürenalp launch site is a popular spot for paragliding enthusiasts. The take-off area is a large grassy slope, easily accessible with a 30-minute uphill walk from the mountain station. The site is regularly used for soaring and cross-country flights.
To reach the launch site, take the 8-person cable car, which ascends 900 meters above the landing area. Once at the top, you can enjoy a meal at the mountain restaurant before embarking on a short 10-minute uphill hike to the take-off point. Note that the hike might take longer for non-locals.
The launch site is a spacious grassy area above the Fürenalpbahn mountain station. It is suitable for training and offers ample space for all pilots. The take-off direction is southwest, and the site is considered easy to launch from, situated at an altitude of 1900 meters.
Coordinates for the launch site are 8.46574689, 46.80524025.
The Fürenalp area is also known for its reliable thermals, even in late autumn. Classic cross-country routes include Fürenalp to Buochserhorn, with flights starting as early as 10:30 AM and becoming more reliable by noon. The thermals in Fürenalp can be challenging to navigate, but with proper altitude gains, you can reach various destinations such as Brunni, Rigidalstock, and Haldigrat.
For those interested in longer flights, the region offers routes towards Interlaken, Graubünden, and even Ticino under favorable conditions. However, be cautious of the numerous obstacles in the Engelberg valley, including cable cars and strong valley winds in spring.
The Fürenalp is also excellent for soaring, especially when other nearby spots like Buehlen, Brändlen, and Brunni are not viable. After take-off, turn right and soar along the ridge of the small valley.
