Description
The Chasseral, located in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland, offers a stunning view over the Swiss Plateau to the 4000-meter peaks of the Alps. This site is a highlight for paragliders, providing excellent soaring conditions and good opportunities for cross-country flights. The main take-off area is easily accessible by car from the south, with parking available at the hotel.
The take-off site is a moderately steep meadow situated about 50 meters below the parking lot, next to the hotel. The meadow is approximately 300 meters long and bordered by trees, requiring a glide ratio of at least 6 to safely clear the forest. The official landing zone is west of Nods, near the old chairlift parking lot, marked with three windsocks. This landing area is oriented west-east, often resulting in side winds during landing. Depending on the wind direction, different landing patterns are recommended: a right-hand pattern for westerly winds and a left-hand pattern for bise (northeasterly) winds. No landing fees are charged, but compensation is required for landings outside the official area.
Caution is advised as the landing zone is relatively narrow and can experience thermal or mechanical turbulence. In bise conditions, it is preferable to land at the end of the landing zone to avoid turbulence from nearby houses. Landing in front of the Buvette (blue wagons) between the parking lot and the yellow band is prohibited.
The Chasseral is the highest peak in the Bernese Jura at 1,607 meters above sea level. The mountain is accessible by road from both Saint-Imier in the north and Nods on the Montagne de Diesse, with bus services available during the summer months. The summit features a large relay station and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Alps, from Säntis to Mont Blanc, on clear days.
Soaring on the north side is relatively straightforward, but caution is needed when top landing. It is recommended to land further down near the road. Flying through the 'Combe Grède' requires significant flying experience and is not suitable for beginners.
