Paragliding Barnicoat Stoke

Barnicoat is a versatile and frequently used paragliding site in the Tasman region of New Zealand. It offers reliable soaring and thermalling conditions, making it suitable for cross-country flights, particularly towards Picton (SW or ENE) and Cable Bay (NE). The takeoff is oriented to the northeast, while the ridge runs north-northwest. Due to its proximity to Nelson Airport, strict regulations apply. Pilots must complete an induction process, carry a correctly set altimeter, and a UHF radio. The airspace must be clear before flying, and pilots must call the Nelson Control Tower to open airspace before launching. The official landing zone is Ngawhatu Sportsfield, also known as Octopus Park, which is within restricted airspace. There are high voltage power lines near this landing zone, so pilots must lose height immediately after crossing them. For high-performance hang gliders, Saxton Field is the designated landing zone, though it presents challenges due to tall trees. Barnicoat is located on the eastern hill behind Stoke, Nelson, with an elevation of 1980 feet (602 meters) AMSL. The airspace is limited to 5,500 feet AMSL, with controlled airspace to the west. Access to the site can be by walking (approximately 1 hour) or driving, though a locked gate restricts vehicle access. Pilots can join the local WhatsApp group for carpooling information.
