St Francis River Mouth

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean, River Mouth

Water type: Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave, Medium wave

Water hazards: None

Water quality: Crystal clear

Infos: Best a high tide, but rideable on a low, the water is flat with some choppier sections at the river mouth, you can ride out the mouth and do some wave riding, there are some sections where you get butter smooth patches as well. The waves are generally small to medium close outs with not much real shape but make good ramps. Waves are good in the area in the off season but not during the kiting season (summer).

Beach type & size: Sand - Tidal

Infos: Huge launch area at low tide, bit smaller at high tide, but always plenty of space, soft sand, not too many shells, but not a problem.

Identified hazards: None

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: Air temp is warm in summer and mild in winter. Water temp is relatively warm, maybe a 3-2 mm wetsuit or a spring suit, or just boardies and a vest, depends on the weather.

Wind type: Thermal

Wind specificities: Wind is good in the season, 15-25 knots is common, onshore/sideshore. The wind is best in summer from September to April, with constant steady winds. Onshore is best for kiting and is not gusty (East). Offshore is too gusty but good for surfing (West).

Best months: January, February, March, April, October, November, December

Access description: by Car - Fly to Cape Town/Johannesburg international, fly/drive to Port Elizabeth, drive to Humansdorp, thru it and 5 minutes to St Francis Bay, go to the river and you are there (rent a car).

Nightlife: Quiet thru the year except for December when the place goes mad for the biggest new years party in the country. Be there, it's crazy! Conveniently this is also when the kiting is best!

Noordhoek

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Small wave, Medium wave, Big wave

Water hazards: Rocks

Water quality: Crystal clear

Infos: Beautiful water with a nice wave and flat sections in between. Lots of space. Some rocks to the north. Almost no people cause the water is just so cold. Lots of wonderful coast line for kitesufing.

Beach type & size: Sand - Big

Infos: This gorgeous 8 km horseshoe curve of fine white sparkling sand is quite unspoilt and deserted. It is the Cape's widest beach with plenty of room. Long wonderful empty beach for land power kiting. Amazing all year round. Sometimes people take their horses or walk their dogs on the beach (and may let them off the leash) but otherwise relatively empty all year round.

Identified hazards: None

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: Long wetsuits needed all year round - although people were seen in shorties some times. Air around 30C in the summer, down to 15C in the winter. The water is pretty cold, around 10-15C in the summer and 13-17C in the winter. The longer the South Easter (prevailing summer wind) blows, the colder the surface water gets. Doesn't matter much in summer though.

Wind type: Thermal

Wind specificities: In the summer, the wind is mostly S to SE. This is the perfect wind (called Cape Dr.) and can get very strong at times - up to 40 knots. The wind tends to pick up in the mornings and get stronger. So if super strong winds are predicted, get there early! NW is mostly a bad weather or winter wind, less reliable. Surfing is possible all year round, although the summer months (December to March) have the best winds. In the winter, you will mostly find NW winds (from the right), although these come rarely. Steady winds.

Best months: January, February, March, April, November, December

Access description: by Car - Just south of Cape Town. Drive south towards Hout Bay and then to Noordhoek. Here drive to the beach.

Specific rules: Other

Extra: Do not walk down the beach unless in large groups. Crime is a real hazard! Signs at the car park attest to this. Many people have been robbed and seriously assaulted on this beach.

Nightlife: Good nightlife in Cape Town.
