East Coast Park

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Chop

Water hazards: Ships, Wave breaker

Water quality: Cloudy

Infos: Small and large chop. Only small waves, at best.

Beach type & size: Grass, Sand - Small

Infos: The East Coast Sea Sport Club is mostly geared towards windsurfers, although kitesurfing gear is also sold in the on-site shop and there is usually a crew of kitesurfers hanging around on windy or potentially windy days during the southwest monsoon. The beach is narrow and gets deep quickly, but with the help of an assistant kitesurfers will be able to launch. The kiters typically hang out a little bit to the south of the main area. There is a small outdoor restaurant at the club, open to the public.

Identified hazards: Trees, Bystanders

Weather specificities: Singapore has a tropical climate and you will be able to ride in board shorts. Wear suncream.

Wind type: Frontal

Wind specificities: This beach works during the Southwest monsoon, which may start as early as June and end as late as September. However, be aware that the Southwest monsoon is pretty weak in Singapore compared with the stronger northeast monsoon. Without good light wind equipment you are unlikely to be able to ride often during the Southwest monsoon.

Best months: June, July, August, September

Access description: by Car - Drive or take a taxi up East Coast Park Service Road to the PA East Coast Sea Sports Club. Be aware that the road is one-way (eastbound) outside the club, so you can not approach from the east.

Specific rules: Zones

Extra: Be courteous and stay out of the way of the many windsurfer beginners at this spot. Also, stay clear of the Bedok Jetty to the west, and do not venture out among the numerous large ships. A sign on the site shows the area where you are allowed to ride.

Nightlife: There are food courts, restaurants and barbecue pits all along East Coast Park. For clubs and the like, head into the city.

Accommodations: Shop, Toilet, Food, Parking

Changi Beach

Kite map of

Level: Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Chop

Water hazards: Ships

Water quality: Cloudy

Infos: Small and large chop. No waves.

Beach type & size: Grass, Sand - Small

Infos: The beach is honestly not the greatest. It is reasonably clean, but it is narrow (especially at high tide) with a lot of trees. Forget about self-launching your kite here; you will need an assistant, or be comfortable drift-launching in deep water (not recommended). This is not an ideal place for beginners.

Identified hazards: Trees

Beachgoer: January, February

Weather specificities: Singapore has a tropical climate and you will be able to ride in board shorts. Wear suncream.

Wind type: Frontal

Wind specificities: Changi Beach only works during the Northeast monsoon, which blows from December to March (but not every day, and don't ever expect nuking winds in Singapore). However, when the conditions are right, this is a decent location. Kite sizes to bring would be 12m to 16m depending on your weight.

Best months: January, February, March, December

Access description: by Car, Bus - Drive or take a taxi up Loyang Avenue, past Changi Village, until you reach Changi Coast Road. Follow the road a short distance and enter Carpark No 6 on your left. There is a sign that reads "Changi Beach Park" (Changi Coast Road, car park 6). There is a toilet and a shower house at the car park, and the beach is just a few steps away. The car park can be very crowded when it is windy.

Specific rules: Zones

Extra: Changi beach is now a well-established kiteboarding area where kiteboarding and windsurfing is tolerated by the authorities, but please use common sense and respect for others to ensure that things stay that way. Please stay reasonably close to the beach and do not ride out into the commercial shipping lane. Also, stay away from the ferry terminal near the south end of the beach, and keep clear of the upwind jetty at the north end of the beach. Doing so will also keep you well clear of the flightpath for the nearby Changi airport Runway I.

Nightlife: Singapore is a major international city. The Changi area is not the most happening, but the rest of the city is only 20-30 minutes away by taxi, car, or public transport.

Stinky Bay

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Shallow, Flat

Water quality: Cloudy

Infos: Shallow, mostly flat water with some chop. Despite the name, the water here is quite nice. At the moment, this is a shallow bay protected by two large wave breakers, yielding unusually flat water.

Beach type & size: Sand - Small

Infos: This is about as good as it gets in Singapore, but this location is in a state of flux due to land reclamation and access is not easy (see below). The size of the beach varies by tide, but even at low tide there tends to be large sandbanks suitable for rigging and launching. However, due to the ongoing land reclamation project in this part of Singapore, the look of and access to this area could change at any time. Bring bug spray - the place is crawling with sand-flies and they're starving! Try not to get bitten because it itches a bitch for weeks.

Identified hazards: Other

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: Singapore has a tropical climate and you will be able to ride in board shorts. Wear suncream.

Wind type: Frontal

Wind specificities: Largely unshielded from wind from the North and Northeast, and mostly unblocked from the South and West as well. As a result, this location works both during the Northeast monsoon (December to March) and the Southwest monsoon (June to September).

Best months: January, February, March, June, July, August, September, December

Access description: by Boat - As of June 2009, overland access to Stinky Bay is no longer possible. There are guardhouses at all possible access roads, and non-authorized vehicles are blocked from entering (and besides, you would in addition to authorization also need an off-road vehicle capable of driving in loose sands to make it all the way to the bay). Access is still possible by boat.

Specific rules: None

Extra: Again, access to this area could disappear at any time. Indeed, the entire bay may be filled with dirt and reclaimed from the sea. Furthermore, the police and coast guard is known to question and chase people away from this beach due to concerns about smuggling.

Nightlife: There is absolutely nothing around this area except sand, shrubs, grasses, and some trees. There may be an occasional stray dog to play with. For a bed to sleep in, and nightlife, return to the city.
