Lobitos

Kite map of

Level: Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Small wave, Medium wave, Big wave

Water hazards: Currents, Ships, Mole

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Lobitos is a wave spot. So make sure you have your wave skills together. It is not a spot to learn how to kite in surf. There is a ripping current at times. Make sure if there are people surfing you give them the right at all times, no matter if you are deeper up the point. There is 2 piers that are down wind that will come up fast even though they look far away from the top of the point. There are also fishing boats moored outside of the pier. Many of people have ended up tangled in the pier or touring through the boats not by choice.

Beach type & size: Sand - Big

Infos: The beach is huge and there is nothing around. The point is a sand point that build off rocks at the top.

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: The water can vary in temp drastically here. One day you can be in trunks and the next you will need a 3/2 full. Bring rubber no matter what, more than likely you will need it here and if you are in trunks it is a bonus.

Wind type: Thermal

Wind specificities: The wind here blows side off to off shore all the time. Rarely is it straight side or onshore. This again means that you have to have your act together and be prepared if you have problems for a long swim or ditch your kite. The wind Wwill blow you out to sea and there are no rescue options unless there are other kiters. But even at that it is risky. The wind can tend to be a bit gusty right at the take off spot of the wave due to some land features that create a bit of a dead spot.

Best months: May, June, July, August, September, October

Access description: by Car - Getting to North Peru is easy. There are 3 airports that have daily flight from Lima (Talara, Piura, and Tumbes. Though there are some places and some new ones getting built right at Lobitos, it is recommended to Stay in Mancora which is about 1 hour north. Getting to Lobitos is the hard part. It is recommended that you get a guide in Mancora that can take you there.

Specific rules: Other

Extra: Though there are no written rules, you will be in the surf and need to respect that. If there is a large pack of guys surfing, let them surf and kite when it is lighter crowds. Since the wind is side off the wave stays smooth all day, so guys may be surfing all day. Never drop in a guy surfing! As for kiting, don't short jibe! Get into the rotation of heading outside and taking your position. If you are going to be doing freestyle, this is not the place for you. You will be in the way. There are plenty of other spots for that. Right now the scene is mellow and everyone respects everyone. You all know that one person can rune this vibe. The place is beautiful, so lets keep it that way. Take all trash out with you. And leave harsh attitudes back at your spot.

Nightlife: Mancora is the spot for nightlife. Whatever you want to get into, it is there. Plenty of bars, disco's and restaurants.

Chicama

Infos: The most famous Chicama, known to be the longest wave in the world is unfortunately not really rideable with a kite as the off-shore winds are shadowed by the beautiful and impressive cliffs facing the wave. However, you still may see Cristian, a local rasta kitesurfer, also famous for training surfing dogs, kitesurfing the end of the wave, near to the peer and even do some downwinders up north.

San Andres

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave, Medium wave

Water hazards: Rocks

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Flat to choppy and shallow water close to the beach. Nice waves breaking just behind the area. The water can be relative polluted by the fisherman harbor right in front or for the fisheries around, anyway we have not found yet a season where this could be a problem. Be careful with the shallow waters with rocky sea floor: high jumps are not recommended in this areas.

Beach type & size: Sand - Medium

Infos: There is a perfect beach to take off with enough space for safety in the close north of the fishing terminal with a sandy beach. There are some round small rocks around on the beach.

Identified hazards: Rocks

Weather specificities: 300 days of sun a year, no matter winter or summer. In summer you don't need a wetsuit, but in winter a thin one (2-3mm) will keep your session long enough to get tired and not cold. Rarely a 15C day, and it is very difficult to have a 30C day as well, so our average is around 20C in winter and 25C in summer.

Wind type: Thermal

Wind specificities: Since it is close to Paracas (10 km) this is still a windy spot, but you will normally find 4 knots less than Paracas, so whenever you are in Paracas and it has light winds, do not come here, but if you are having strong winds in Paracas Bay, this is the right spot to learn or enjoy nice wave. The winds are almost always coming from the South so you will mostly find sideshore winds. Winter (October to April): Ride 5, 6 days a week. The wind starts at 11 am and will last till 7 pm when night falls - from 11 to 1:30 pm the wind is not gusty, from 1:30 to 3:30 gusts will raise 5 knots on average, from 3:30 till night it will get stronger. Summer (May to September): Ride 3 days a week. The wind starts at 1:30 pm and will last until 5:30 pm without much gusty wind, unless we get a Paraca you will be riding in the middle of the sand storm which is really funny but reserved only for experienced kitesurfers.

Best months: January, February, March, April, October, November, December

Access description: by Car - Get to Lima and drive through the `Panamericana Sur` to Pisco (km 220) and then keep going south till you reach Paracas Detour. You can get on a bus that will take you directly to Pisco for $4 from Lima (Soyuz) and then you can get a taxi for $4 more from Pisco to Paracas.

Specific rules: None

Extra: No rules at this spot, but be friendly with the fishermen around, this spot is right in front of the fisherman harbor and they can be very helpful. Beware of people around, you will not get mugged here at all, but you might `loose` things if you are not aware or you are trusting `your new best friend`.

Nightlife: Have dinner in the `El Chorito` restaurant (which is a very good restaurant where Peruvians with some money to spend will go), later on go to Hotel Paracas and have some Pisco Sours. If you go to Pisco for fun, do not go alone, get a buddy to go with you. The best night club is at restaurant `As the Oros` which is a premium restaurant and has a very safe environment in their disco.

Accommodations: Rescue, Toilet, Food, Parking
