Athaiba

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave

Water hazards: Animals, Reefs

Water quality: Crystal clear

Infos: Clear water. It is shallow for about 500m out and then it gets deeper. There is a great tide difference. The water is choppy but because it is so long shallow it gives us some nice waves, ramps etc.

Infos: The beach is soft sand with some shells. The safety of the launch or landing can be dependent on the tide. The beach gets narrow (30m) on a high tide. There is a house and apartment were we launch and land but they are 30+m from the beach. Otherwise there is a good 2km of beach that is available. There is no reef on the beach so no danger of cutting yourself. Sometimes at the lowest tide and during the rough season there are some rocks revealed, but as soon as you get out, after about 10m it is nice sand again. The sand on the beach is nice and soft. You can drive your car up easily right to the water if you want.

Identified hazards: Rocks, Shells, Bystanders, Cars

Weather specificities: You can surf all year here and the wetsuit is optional. If you wear one, bring a lightweight shorty. Most surf in a rash guard and shorts. Air temperatures ranges from 23-45C and water is generally 23+C. Rain is very rare.

Wind specificities: Generally we have good winds in the spring, summer and fall. In the winter the wind is highly unpredictable. Average wind is 12-15 knots, but very steady. A NE wind is the best, whereas a NW lacks punch. Athaibah Beach is right in Muscat and can have wind when other areas don't. Very localized weather.

Best months: March, April, May, June, July, September, October

Access description: by Car - Athaibah Beach is right in Muscat. If you drive up to the beach using the gate you don't need a 4WD, otherwise you can drive up to the beach anywhere in the dune area. 5min away from the airport. Drive to Ghoubrah roundabout and go straight from there to the beach. Drive along the beach until you see the kiters. Theres always someone there.

Specific rules: Zones

Extra: Do take care as occasionally cars and groups of people wander across the beach, especially after 5pm. Watch out for crazy quad bikers. Please don't kitesurf near the big hotels (Hyatt, Interconti) since it is too onshore and too many people on the beach.

Fishermens Bay

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Medium wave

Water hazards: Animals, Stones

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Pay attention: tons of Tiger sharks during turtle season.

Beach type & size: Sand - Big

Identified hazards: None

Weather specificities: Summer can be hot if there is no wind but most of the summer it is quite windy and cool (for Oman) around 24-28C. Water temp is coolish but don't need anything more then a shorty. It is always 23-45C depending on whether it is winter or summer and rain is virtually unheard of.

Wind type: Thermal

Wind specificities: The wind is a thermal wind that is generated by the difference for the cold current coming from Antarctica and the hot land. Which means very regular wind as long as the land is hot so cooler weather and clouds are a bad thing. You can expect about 20-35 knots most days and some days stronger. The wind starts in the morning being offshore but switches to sideshore (more southerly) and picks up significantly by mid day. If the wind doesn't switch enough it can be gusty but manageable. In the morning it tends to be off shore and it is possible to surf on the other side of the bay where the wind is a bit more on shore. Summer is the windy season. In the summer it can be very gusty with a range of 15-30 knots.

Access description: by Car - From Muscat drive towards Sur (3-4 hour trip). When you get to AlKamil go right to Al Ashkhara at the second turn off for Rus al Hadd go left. When you reach the coast make another left. Go for 10 km there is a small dirt road that leads to a small mosque on the beach. You will see a big rock on the left and a point break on the right. You can rent a car for this trip as you are never really off road.
