Infos: Reef: not possible to ride on low tides. But still room to ride elsewhere. As the area has a reef the water tends to be fairly flat. Tide is not really an issue as their isn't much of it. Kiting is always possible but in spring tides it gets very shallow. Nice wave riding on hight tide near the beach and on low tide at the reef.

Weather specificities: It is possible to ride all year round. Water temp: NE Monsoon: 26C, SE Monsoon: 20C. At 4 south latitude, the equatorial climate is near perfect.

Wind type: Trade

Wind specificities: Strong wind in the summer and lighter winds at Christmas just depends on size of your kites if you can ride or not. The winds are either from the Northeast or Southeast and hence is always sideonshore. The winds can get up to 30 knots at times but usually more in the 16-20 knot range. When the winds are from the Northeast a constant trade wind builds up as the day goes on. The Southeasterly monsoon has it windy time around June and July and it is very windy then. NE Monsoon: average 10-18 knots (January to April). SE Monsoon: average 15-25 knots (June to September).

Access description: by Car, Bus, Boat - Turn right from Malindi airport and follow road for quite a long way then turn right at a petrol station, follow that road and turn left at T-junction and get your kit out there and walk up the beach to the second rock. Kiting is best from this spot.

Galu Beach

Infos: As the area has a reef the water tends to be fairly flat. Tide is not really an issue as their isn't much of it. Kiting is always possible but in spring tides it gets very shallow. Anywhere on the Kenya coast is great. As the coast line has a reef there is always the opportunity to do some wave riding on the breakers which is good fun. The reef break is 1 km offshore and gives great waves to play on in addition to the Indian Ocean swell. Great wave periods, amazing sand bars to rest on. Fantastic downwinders over the reef for 15 km.

Beach type & size: Sand - Big

Infos: White flat sand, no glass, no dirt, no oil. Just amazingly beautiful white shell sand. 100 m wide at least at low tide. No dangers. Hardly any people or beach boys unlike other areas on Mombassa. This beach is still virgin.

Weather specificities: Always sunny and warm. Sun shines bright every day, sometimes clouds in morning. Humid but quite bearable due to constant breeze on the shore. Air temperature of around 30C and water temperature around 28C, can ride in board shorts all year round.

Access description: by Car, Bus - Galu Beach located 40 km south of Mombasa and 15 km south of Diani Beach. Take south road out of Mombassa, cross with Likoni ferry, drive south 30 kms, turn right at Ukunda junction and right at Diani junction - continue till dirt track, continue along dirt road till Aqualand - turn left and enter paradise.

Infos: Very occasionally, there are other users on the water. Miles of ocean to oneself. A huge sand bar extends out for a few KM. Excellent flatwater conditions +/- 3 hrs around low tide. At high tide, some 1m waves break way out on the sand bar but no tubes. Just fun to play on.

Infos: Beach is soft. Unpolluted and very empty. Often you and friends are the only ones around. Long beach stretching for miles and miles to kite along.

Diani Beach

Infos: The reef is about 1km offshore so inside the water is generally flat to slight chop, outside the reef you have the swell of the Indian Ocean to play with. The lagoon out to the reef can be shallow in places at low tide, has the flattest water but watch out for the sea-urchins underfoot. Mid to high tide is fine.

Infos: 50-100m wide white sandy beach. There's a tree line next to the beach but no real problem.

Weather specificities: Virtually on the equator, 30-35C every day. The water is warm, only need shorts but wear something on your feet.

Wind type: Trade

Wind specificities: NE trade winds December and January, with 3-5 Bft. No wind in February. SE winds apparently May to September with 3-6 Bft. Wind blows from 11am through to 1-2am. Can be light with 3 Bft at times but will build to 4 or 5 Bft on good days.

Infos: Nyali Beach has a large area of flat water enclosed by a reef 2kms offshore which offers some epic wave-riding. Although tidal it works on all states of the tide unlike a number of other beaches in the Mombasa area.

Infos: The beach is large, wide and generally uncrowded, except on Sundays when it can become quite busy. The make up of the beach is white sand so don't forget your sunglasses.

Weather specificities: The air temperature is in the mid-30's almost all-year round you won't need more than board shorts and a rash guard plus plenty of sun-block. The water temperature is around 25-28C.

Wind type: Trade

Wind specificities: Weather in Kenya is divided into the Southeast and Northeast monsoons which give sideshore winds from either the right or left at different times of the year. Northeast Monsoon gives anywhere between 8m and 12m weather most days from December to April. South-East Monsoon howls from June to September and can blow upwards of 30 knots+. Due to the prevailing sideshore conditions this is a great place to learn and improve. Sideshore NNE and SSW.

Access description: by Car - Flying to Mombasa is generally via Nairobi although there are some scheduled and charter flights to fly directly. Once at the airport it's a quick 20 minute transfer to Nyali Beach.
