Huaraz Punta Callan

Huaraz - Peru, specifically the Punta Callan site, offers a unique paragliding experience. This site is rarely used and is known for small cross-country flights. The site record is 6.2 km. Located in South America, Peru, the Huaraz Punta Callan area is well-suited for cross-country flights, often featuring very strong thermals. Flights along the valley are possible, with base heights on good days ranging between 5,000 and 6,000 meters. However, the valley wind can become very strong, and landing spots are sometimes scarce. The valley also contains power lines of various sizes, adding to the challenge. The thermals are very active and demanding, making takeoffs and landings at such high altitudes significantly more difficult due to higher sink rates. The best flying conditions are from May to October during the dry season, though occasionally, good flights can also be had from November to April during the rainy season. For more information about the flying area, including details, images, and accommodations, visit www.paragliding365.com. Flight: From Punta Callan heading east, the first thermals are already present. You can fly along the Santa Valley and enjoy the breathtaking views of the 6000-meter peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. Walk and Fly: Starting point is Huaraz center. Almost all vehicles heading over Punta Callan towards the Pacific will take you and your gear up for a small fee. You can start directly from Punta Callan or halfway up. However, the wind often becomes too strong in the afternoons. This site is only recommended for experienced pilots. Pilot Meeting Point: Beto, the owner of the pizzeria and tour provider "Montrek" on the main street of Huaraz, is a former paragliding pilot and is happy to provide more information. Accommodation: Hostels and hotels range from approximately 15 to 180 Soles for a double room. Getting There: Huaraz is located about 500 km north of Lima, along the Rio Santa, between the Cordillera Negra and the Cordillera Blanca. Season: The dry season runs from May to October, while the rainy season is from November to April.

Lima Costa Verde Miraflores / Paraport

The paragliding site in Miraflores, Lima, Peru, is a highly popular spot for both locals and visitors. The take-off area is a small circle of grass specifically designated for paragliding, making it easy to launch, although it can get crowded with tandem pilots, especially on weekends. Flights here are dynamic and offer the unique experience of soaring close to buildings in a major city. You can fly up to the Larcomar shopping center, built into the cliffs in front of the Marriott hotel, and see your reflection in the hotel's mirrored front. The cliffs of Costa Verde provide a stunning backdrop, with a 70-meter drop to the beach offering excellent lift. The site is located in the districts of Miraflores (Paraport) and San Isidro (Ghandi Park). The winds are typically laminar, with minimal turbulence, making for smooth flights. There are numerous landing spots along the route, and taxis are readily available to take you back up for another flight. During the summer, the heat can create thermals that allow pilots to reach heights of 500 to 700 meters above the city, particularly in the district of Barranco. The area is busy throughout the day on weekends and during lunch hours and after 5 p.m. on weekdays. Night flights are rare but can be spectacular between 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM. For more information, visit [Aeroxtreme](http://www.aeroxtreme.com/) and [Perufly](http://www.perufly.com/flights/index.php?page=site_lima). Lima Cerro Pachacamac

Located 30 km south of Lima, this paragliding site offers a unique flying experience. In winter, the area is lush with pastures, flocks of sheep, and various bird species. In contrast, summer transforms it into a warm, dry desert landscape. The site is known for its thermodynamic conditions and interesting thermal activity on sunny days. However, if a marine breeze enters and the sun is at its zenith, turbulence can occur, so it's best to fly away from the hillside. Distance flights are limited due to the cloud base usually maxing out at 900 meters, but you can enjoy flights from 10 AM to 5-6 PM. Access to the takeoff area is somewhat remote, but a 4x4 vehicle can get you there. The landing zones are broad but can be a bit turbulent. Takeoff is from the middle of the mountain 'Punta Blanca.' The spot is small but easy to launch from. In summer, it can be dusty, while winter brings more vegetation, keeping your glider clean. Landing is straightforward with a large designated area. The field owner is accommodating, but be cautious of another nearby landing spot where the owner is not welcoming to pilots. To get there, having your own car is essential. While buses and taxis are options, they are not convenient. Local instructors and schools frequent this site, so coordinating with them is advisable. This site is particularly favorable in winter, with excellent thermal conditions. The mountain, approximately 600 meters high, is climbed halfway for takeoff. The landing area is slightly sloped and thermally active, so caution is needed during landing. This is the closest thermal site to Lima and is often used for local championships. Pilots typically fly in Pachacamac in the morning and move to the coast in Lima in the afternoon when conditions become too strong. Valle Sagrado Incas near Cuzco

Cusco, Peru, offers an exceptional paragliding experience with a takeoff altitude of 3734 meters. The takeoff zone is generally easy to manage, though pilots should be prepared for occasionally violent thermals. The environment is picturesque, and top landing is possible, but it's advisable to consult with local pilots for guidance. The region is known for its potential for cross-country (XC) flights, with some pilots achieving distances up to 21.0 km. The area is regularly used by paragliders, and while it can be bumpy and challenging to center, the thermals can lift you up to 6000 meters. October is particularly favored by local pilots for XC flying due to the favorable thermal conditions. For new pilots, the Watchtower of Racchi and the Valley of Urubamba, also known as 'The Sacred Valley of the Incas' (2900 meters above sea level), offer excellent morning flights with a 1000-meter altitude difference. The thermal activity during these hours allows for enjoyable and accessible flights. Experienced pilots will find Cusco and its surroundings to be an incredible thermal area with excellent cross-country opportunities. Cloud bases typically range between 5300 and 6100 meters, and the thermals are varied but consistently strong and fast. Pampa de Quinua

Located in the Ayacucho region of Peru, this paragliding site offers a unique walk-and-fly experience. The take-off point is situated at an elevation of 3,848 meters on a mountaintop just above the 'pampa'. Due to the prevailing winds from the North, it is crucial to start your ascent early in the morning to ensure a wind-free take-off. If there is wind, it will likely be from the back, making take-off challenging. You can hire horses for $10 each to assist with the climb, which takes about an hour. The landing zone is on the pampa itself. While this site is not ideal for extensive flights, it provides a fun and adventurous experience. The flying season runs from April 1st to October 30th. Paron Caraz

Located in the Ancash region of Peru, near the village of Pueblo Libre/Caraz, this paragliding site offers a unique experience. The launch point is situated on a hilly outcrop of the Cordillera Negra at an altitude of 3309 meters. The site is known for its potential for cross-country flights, with a site record of 69.5 km. To reach the site, you can take a regular bus from Caraz to Pueblo Libre. From there, it's a two-hour hike up to 3250 meters. Occasionally, there are buses that go further up, over a pass. The ascent can be quite thorny, but once at the top, you'll find many cultivated fields, providing ample space for takeoff. The best time to start is between ten and eleven in the morning. Known routes include flights to Huaraz, approximately 30 km away. After eleven, a valley wind begins to pick up, often reaching speeds of 30 km/h or more. Ensure you have enough open space for landing to avoid turbulence caused by obstacles near the ground. For more details, including images and accommodation options, visit www.paragliding365.com.

Chupuro Huancayo

Cerro Chupuro, located in the Huancayo region of Peru, offers a unique paragliding experience with occasional use and some potential for cross-country (XC) flights. The site features a 21 km long ridge that provides excellent soaring opportunities. The official takeoff point is at 3740 meters above sea level (mosl), but for the more adventurous pilots, there's a higher takeoff at 4370 mosl near an antenna. This higher launch requires good physical condition to achieve sufficient lift. The valley is expansive, with a width averaging 7 km, making it an ideal location for cross-country flights. The landing zones are generally at 3200 mosl, and the only turbulence encountered is typically from thermals. These thermals are powerful, often exceeding 8 meters per second, but they are wide and predictable, allowing pilots to assess conditions easily. Cloud bases in this region are usually above 5000 mosl, so it's crucial to dress warmly as temperatures can drop rapidly, potentially forcing an early landing. For less experienced pilots, flying before noon is recommended when thermals are strong enough to stay aloft but not overly intense. In the afternoons, winds increase but remain manageable compared to other Andean sites. The local community is welcoming, often inviting pilots to enjoy a meal or a drink of 'Chicha.' Thermals are well-defined, allowing pilots to gain significant altitude without extensive searching. Between thermals, the air is generally calm, permitting smooth maneuvers. Lunahuaná

The flight at Lunahuaná is dynamic and somewhat thermic. Unlike most coastal locations, the winds here are not laminar and are affected by turbulence from broken thermals and the topographical environment. The takeoff point is located 227 meters above the valley and is a 25-minute walk away. Winds typically start arriving from 9:00 AM onwards, and you need to be prepared because within 20 minutes, the winds can pick up speed, making takeoff dangerous. While you can cover small distances, the experience is highly enjoyable. Landings are generally good, although the last three meters can drop quickly. Fortunately, the ground is tilled and ready for cultivation, which is easier on your feet. Lunahuaná is a deep valley on the Peruvian coast, situated 160 km southeast of Lima City, with a 35 km detour from the South Panamericana highway. This rural area features a blend of desert landscapes and lush valley greenery. The valley produces various nutritional products and temperate climate fruits at 600 meters above sea level. It is a popular destination for local tourists almost every month of the year, attracting families and young people who come to enjoy adventure sports. Rafting, or "canotaje," is the area's main attraction due to the excellent river conditions. Mountain biking, cliff climbing, trekking, and free flight also benefit from the favorable climate and geographical conditions. Accommodation in the area ranges from $4 to $45 per night. Meals are reasonably priced and delicious. The bus journey costs around $10, and a typical visit lasts about two days. Chincha

The hillsides in Chincha range from 60 to 200 meters in height, starting in the Chincha Valley and extending to the Cañete Valley, covering a distance of approximately 35 km. The flight from departure to landing spans about 70 km and can last nearly 4 hours. The speed record for this distance is 2 hours and 20 minutes, set by Franz Schilter. The flight is primarily dynamic with minimal thermal activity, characterized by "dolphin rounds" rather than swirling thermals. There are two challenging spots, but with precision, wind awareness, and skill, they can be navigated successfully. Pilots must fly close to the hillside, especially in the turbulent first section, requiring full concentration to avoid forced landings. This route was first fully flown in December 1997 by Arturito Wong, who was 14 years old at the time, along with a group of experienced pilots. Flights are often organized by pilots in Lima, particularly around Parque Miraflores. It's common to join these groups, share fuel costs, and sometimes even tag along with student groups. The hillsides face the sea and are located 185 km south of Lima, surrounded by exotic landscapes, broad beaches, green swamps, and wild nature. The area is rich in Afro-Peruvian culture, with vibrant folklore and spicy cuisine prepared using traditional recipes. Towns like El Carmen are known for their lively street performances and cultural heritage. For accommodation, the 'El Valle' Inn in Chincha is recommended. It is the official site for national championships, offers three-star amenities, and charges US$ 10 per pilot. The inn also has one of the best restaurants in the South, with significant discounts for pilots. Wind conditions in this area can vary greatly, so it's advisable to consult with Lima pilots about the winds before planning your stay. The bus journey from Lima takes about two hours, making it possible to complete a visit in two days. The hillsides are 185 km south of Lima. The lack of infrastructure and the distance from Lima (3.5 hours) are reasons why this area is not flown more frequently. For more information, visit [Paragliding365](http://www.paragliding365.com).

Ayacucho Campanallo

At an altitude of 3509 meters, the paragliding site in Ayacucho, Peru, offers regularly used soaring conditions with the possibility of small cross-country flights. The site record stands at 29.3 km. Landing: The best landing spot is the "Zona Recreational de Quicapata," recently declared an official paragliding landing area. This large green space is adjacent to the military quarters, so avoid flying directly over them. The landing zone is at 2900 meters, 600 meters lower than the take-off point. Be cautious of the power lines and ensure you have enough altitude to reach the landing area. Exit through the north gate and turn right to find a road where you can catch a cab back to town. Getting There: You can take a cab from the center of Ayacucho to the town of Campanallocc. The local paragliding club offers transportation with a Toyota Land Cruiser for a reasonable price, including a driver. Contact Christoph Van Daele at 0051 966 968 146 or cvandaele@gmail.com for arrangements. Comments: This site is considered one of the best places to fly in Peru, especially from Semana Santa until September. The flying conditions are very stable with blue thermals, and the best time to fly is around noon when the wind reaches 15 km/h. Flying without wind is not advisable due to the altitude, as landing can be quite fast. The house thermal can be found by crossing the first valley and then heading left. Weather Hazards: During the flying season, weather hazards are minimal. However, there is a possibility of large rain clouds forming in the late afternoon, especially from the south. Ayacucho is situated in a valley, and you can observe cloud formations on all horizons. Wintertime offers the best flying conditions with mostly open skies and an average cloud coverage of 20%. Flight Regulation: It is advisable to inform the airport of your activities by calling 066312418. There are two daily flights from Lima, one in the early morning and another at 16:30 in the afternoon. These flights approach from the north and land in a southward direction. Parking: Parking is available at both the take-off and landing sites. The GPS coordinates for take-off parking are 13.2035 S, 74.2438 W, and for landing parking, 13.1821 S, 74.2271 W. Tourism: For additional information and assistance, you can contact the paragliding enthusiasts at www.viaviacafe.com on the marketplace or email ayacucho.peru@viaviacafe.com. They can also help with monument visits, walking trips, and dining options. Alternatively, visit the clubhouse 'La Magia Negra' on Mariscal Caceres with 9 de diciembre. Take-off: The take-off site is located 40 minutes from Ayacucho on a hilltop at 3500 meters, named after the nearby town of Campanallo. The take-off area is triangular and situated just above the road leading there, facing north, which is the prevailing wind direction year-round.
