Surf Sanguessuga

Sanguessuga - South Coast, Portugal Sanguessuga features a powerful left-breaking reef wave, characterized by hollow and fast conditions. This spot only works during extremely high tides in summer, with optimal conditions requiring a rising tide, northwest to southwest swell, and southeast to northeast winds. The bottom consists of sharp coral and rocks, making it essential to wear a helmet. Accessed via a short walk from the road between São Torpes and Porto Covo, Sanguessuga is marked by a prominent flat rock visible from the shore. The wave offers a thrilling yet risky experience, as it can produce some of the deepest tubes for bodyboarders. However, it is crucial to note that the wave can become dangerous above 1.5 meters, often leading to injuries. With minimal crowds during the week and weekends, this spot is ideal for those seeking an adrenaline rush in a secluded environment.
