Description
Pianos - Sunset Cliffs, California
Pianos features a rocky reef break with a flat sandy bottom, ideal for experienced surfers. The waves break both right and left, offering hollow, fast, and fun rides. Best surfed during falling tide, it requires a significant swell to work effectively. Access involves a 15-30 minute walk, with public parking available at the south end of Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
This spot, located inside the chasm on its south side, is known for its unique wave characteristics, where eel grass creates a visual effect reminiscent of a player piano. The take-off is critical, requiring a one-stroke launch over the reef. While barrels can occur, exiting the wave is tricky, often necessitating a dive or landing on the reef. The atmosphere is relaxed, making it a great choice for surfers seeking a chill vibe, especially on epic days when the crowd is minimal. Respect for local surfers is essential to maintain the spot's friendly environment.
