Description
Pero (Pero Rights) - Western Tip of the Island
Pero features a challenging reef break with both left and right-hand waves, characterized by hollow and powerful conditions. The bottom consists of sharp coral and rocks, making it essential for surfers to be cautious. The spot works best at low to mid tide, particularly on a rising tide, but can be inconsistent due to trade wind chop and sweeping currents.
Accessing Pero requires a long walk (over 30 minutes) after taking a bus from Waingapu to Waitabula, which can take up to two days due to poor transport. The surf is best during the wet season with optimal north winds, while the dry season favors lefts due to E-SE winds. Despite its potential for barrels, the spot can be fickle, and surfers should be prepared for a wait for the ideal conditions. With few surfers around, Pero offers a unique and isolated experience, but caution is advised due to rips and rocky hazards.
