Surf Pataua

Pataua - Whangarei, New Zealand Pataua is a rivermouth surf spot known for its right-hand waves breaking over a sandy bottom. The waves can be hollow, fast, and fun, particularly at low and mid tides during rising tide conditions. Access involves a short walk (5-15 minutes) after driving east from Whangarei on Whangarei Heads Road. This spot offers a laid-back atmosphere, but can get crowded when the surf is firing. The quality of the waves is highly dependent on river flow and swell direction, primarily from the southeast, east, and northeast. If Pataua isn’t delivering, nearby Ocean Beach provides a reliable alternative with a 6km stretch of powerful waves. Be cautious of rips and undertow, especially during busy surf days.
