Surf Lyall Bay

Lyall Bay - Wellington, New Zealand Lyall Bay features a beach break with both right and left-hand waves, predominantly on a sandy bottom. The spot is known for fun waves, especially when the bars are working well. It accommodates all tides and is accessible within a five-minute walk from nearby parking. This urban surf location can get crowded, particularly during summer weekends, but it remains a great spot for beginners and intermediate surfers. The main attraction is "The Wall," a solid left-hander breaking off the eastern break wall. While the beach stretches for 1500 meters with average beach breaks, there’s also a rarely surfed bombora offshore that only breaks on larger swells. Due to its proximity to the South Island, Lyall Bay may experience limited swell, making it essential to check conditions in the surrounding areas for optimal surfing opportunities.
