Description
The Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf, Germany, is a highly frequented paragliding site known for its excellent cross-country potential. During the construction phase of the Nebelhornbahn, the launch site at Zeigersattel is available. Please refer to the image and always check our latest updates under 'News'. The Höfatsblick/Probsthaus launch site has been closed since July 23, 2019, due to the construction of a material cableway. For safety reasons, this launch site will remain closed until the work is completed. A small fenced launch area at Zeigersattel is available for paragliders. For current information and maps regarding access to Zeigersattel and restricted areas, visit https://www.odv-allgaeu.de/news.
The launch site is located directly below the large terrace of the Höfatsblick mountain station, with a west-facing launch direction. This alpine launch site is bordered by cableways on both sides.
Authorized pilots include:
- Holders of restricted and unrestricted pilot licenses
- Trainees
- Tandem pilots
This alpine launch site (launch direction W [250° - 280°]) is bordered by cableways on both sides. During training operations, launch preparations and behavior must be adapted to the circumstances. Landing, top landing, aerobatics, and daring flight maneuvers are prohibited in the launch area.
The Nebelhorn is one of the most attractive flying sites in Germany, situated in the high alpine Allgäu Alps. The flying area is generally considered challenging. The main launch site is at the Edmund-Probst-Haus at the mid-station, with a west-facing launch direction. The summit launch site is accessible via another cableway section but is demanding due to its steepness. A firm surface, suitable weather, and flight experience are prerequisites for launching here. An unrestricted pilot license is required, and tandem pilots need additional permission from ODV e.V. Another launch site is located further west (Gaißfuß), which is easier to reach on foot and less challenging than the Nebelhorn summit. The landing site Oibele is surrounded by trees and can be turbulent. For more information, visit the club's website: http://www.odv-allgaeu.de/
The Nebelhorn is the most popular flying site in the Hochallgäu region. In 1989, paragliders crossed the Alps to South Tyrol from here.
Optimal flying times are early morning, with potential lee conditions in the afternoon; later at the mountain station. Ideal weather conditions are southern to western winds. The thermic period is very long, including winter thermals.
Difficulty: Before launching, carefully examine the challenging terrain. Consider thermals and valley wind systems.
Above the mountain stations/Probsthaus: An avalanche rope lies across the green slopes on the west side of a notch. This rope is not visible from the air, so flights on the east side and searching for updrafts on the west flank should be avoided.
