Parapente Whangaparaoa Te Haruhi Bay

Located at the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, primarily within Shakespeare Regional Park, this small soaring ridge is ideal for reasonably strong winds. The site is situated on the ridge immediately behind Te Haruhi Bay. To access it, park in Te Haruhi Bay and take the Tiritiri track up the hill. At the kissing gate, turn right toward the takeoff area. Alternatively, from the gate to the campground, walk about 100 meters east along the track into the camping ground, cross the stile below the hill on the left, and walk steeply uphill. Due to its relatively small face, only a limited number of gliders can soar simultaneously, with a maximum of two hang gliders. Landing is not permitted on the beach in front of the main public area at the mid and western end of the bay. Recommended landing zones are at the eastern end of the bay or in the middle paddock, which is often frequented by kite surfers and adjacent to where vehicles are parked. The site is best suited for south and southwest wind directions. The designated site radio channel is Channel 20 - 476.900MHz. Restrictions include: - Hang Gliding: HG Intermediate - Paragliding: PG2 + 30 hours Caution is advised due to the presence of Pohutukawa trees on the soaring slope and landing areas, which can cause turbulence. Additionally, a fence has been built right across the takeoff area, making takeoff in front of the fence not recommended due to turbulence from the trees. The flight ceiling is 2,500 feet ASL. Cars must be parked at the end of the publicly accessible roadway, with the remaining distance covered on foot.
