Description

The paragliding site at Wissenberg offers an easy launch from an altitude of 1340-1550 meters. This location is rarely used and primarily suitable for soaring. Flight logs indicate that it is mostly flown in winter and spring, suggesting that launches might only be permitted outside the vegetation period. It's advisable to check with locals for confirmation. For transportation, you can take the Luftseilbahn Matt-Wissenberg cable car. Contact them at +41 55 642 15 46 for more details. The launch site is a moderately steep, hilly meadow located at an altitude of 1350 meters. It is oriented southwest and is easily accessible with a 15-minute walk from the cable car station. The exact coordinates are 9.17788946, 46.96802269. Matt, situated on the Glarus Elm route, has been a well-known training site since the early days of paragliding. From the valley station in Matt, the cable car takes you directly to Wissenberg/Weissenberg. From the mountain station, follow the footpath to the first stream, then head slightly left (northwest) towards the fire pit. The launch area is just below the fire pit, above the avalanche barriers. Despite the valley wind, which can be strong and usually comes from the direction of Schwanden/Glarus, the launch site is relatively easy. The landing zone is located in the direction of Schwanden/Glarus, next to the road. For those seeking a higher altitude difference, a two-hour hike to Sunnenhörnli is recommended. This higher launch point offers a better chance of connecting with thermals. The site is known for its excellent training conditions and reliable thermals, typical of the Glarus region. However, the strong valley wind should not be underestimated. Pilots must navigate between the hillside, high-voltage power lines, telephone lines, and the cable car. This area is ideal for a relaxed flight or an evening glide, usually with thermal activity. The lower launch site is a 10-15 minute walk from the mountain station, but those who are more adventurous can hike further up to the Sunnenhörnli ridge for a higher launch point and better thermal connections. Thermal activity generally picks up in the afternoon due to the steep terrain and multiple thermal triggers. However, the thermals usually start later in the day due to the site's orientation. During landing, you can utilize the thermals generated by the buildings, although they are typically not strong enough for significant altitude gain.
