Description
The Weiherkuppe, located directly above the flying village of Poppenhausen-Sieblos in Germany, offers excellent soaring and thermal flying opportunities, especially in southwest wind conditions. This site has been a popular spot for over 30 years, with the first hang gliders taking off from here.
The main wind direction in the Rhön region is southwest, providing frequent chances to explore this mountain. The site is regularly used for soaring, and occasionally, good cross-country flights are possible.
To reach the site, head towards 'Palettenwerk' in Sieblos. You can park behind the Palettenwerk, and from there, it's a 5-10 minute walk up the serpentine path to the launch area. The Palettenwerk Krenzer KG has kindly allowed the use of their parking lot directly below the slope.
The launch area is in the middle section of the slope. Often, the entry into the ridge lift band is possible to the right in front of the beech forest. Remember to follow the flight rules and use PMR Channel 1.1 when exceeding 200m above the launch. Be mindful of the glider operations at Wasserkuppe.
Landing is on the mowed meadow area below the launch slope. Please pack up your gear on the field path.
For accommodation, you can enjoy an après-fly experience at Heckenhöfchen, or dine at the restaurants in Hotel Rhön Garden and on the Wasserkuppe.
