Description

Warriewood is a coastal soaring site near Sydney, ideal for intermediate pilots. The site features a north-east facing cliff with a lower section on the western end that is less steep and covered in coastal scrub, and a higher vertical cliff face towards the ocean end. Pilots often enjoy flying over the 'blow hole,' a sea cavern running through part of the headland. This site allows for 360s and other maneuvers, making it an enjoyable experience. Takeoff for paragliders is from a small grassy park on the western section of the cliff. After launching, always turn left towards the beach, as it is only just possible to make the glide if the lift is too light to stay up. Gain height on the lower slope and once level with the sandstone lookout, cross onto the main face. When conditions are favorable, pilots often cross from here to Cooks Terrace. Landing is typically at Warriewood Beach. Top landing in the clear area to the left of launch is relatively easy, but caution is needed in strong conditions due to turbulence generated by bushes in front. Top landing on the launch is possible but requires precise flying. Avoid flying over the road. Be aware of lower-level airspace at 2500 feet and avoid flying over houses. Hazards include power lines along the road between the surf club and the toilet block on the beach. If you notice wind gusts on the water behind Mona Vale Headland, consider landing soon as this indicates the breeze is veering north. Contact the Sydney Paragliding & Hang Gliding Club before flying here for the first time. Parking is available on Narrabeen Park Parade. When coming from the south, turn onto Ocean St off Pittwater Rd, follow along until you cross Narrabeen Lagoon, and turn right at the second or northern roundabout onto Narrabeen Park Parade.
