Description
At an altitude of 1730 meters with a height difference of approximately 1000 meters, this site is highly frequented and offers excellent cross-country flying opportunities, including large FAI triangles. It is by far the best and most popular launch site for paragliding in the Wank area, ranking among the top in Germany.

This mountain is one of the most thermally active in Germany. The take-off direction ranges from southeast to southwest. Hang gliders have a ramp available near the mountain station facing southwest. However, be aware that starting from early afternoon, north winds can sometimes make launching difficult or impossible.
The paragliding landing zone is sheltered from the valley wind at 'Gschwandtner Bauer,' located at the southeastern foot of the Wank. Although this landing site is somewhat outside of Garmisch, it is preferable due to the strong valley winds affecting other landing areas. Additionally, it offers the best snacks and a cozy beer garden. The return trip to the Wankbahn parking lot must be self-organized, but a few friendly words usually secure a ride quickly.
Hang gliders land at the Osterfelder landing site. Since hang gliders must fly over the entire Garmisch-Partenkirchen area, the Wank is designated as a B-license area for hang gliders. More information can be found in the Osterfelder flight area info.
Unfortunately, the Wankbahn cable car operates only during the summer season since 2003. Therefore, hopes for early thermal flights after the 'winter break' at Wank are dashed until the end of April. As an alternative, you can hike up, which takes about two and a half hours from the valley station or about two hours from Gschwandtner Bauer, depending on your fitness level. It is definitely worth the effort!
