Description

Alp Scheidegg, located in the Zurich Oberland region, has become one of the most attractive flying areas near Zurich in recent years. Managed by the Delta Club Zürcher Oberland for over 35 years, it offers excellent infrastructure, including a spacious launch meadow next to the Alp Scheidegg restaurant. There are four large landing zones in the valley, ensuring safe landings for both hang gliders and paragliders. The most frequented landing zone, Hüebli, provides free parking spaces rented by the club. Pilots must use designated parking spots near the launch site, as parking on restaurant premises is prohibited. Due to limited parking, carpooling is recommended. The flying area is situated within the TMA 2 Dübendorf, which is permanently active with a lower limit of 1700m above sea level. Pilots must strictly adhere to this maximum altitude to avoid the risk of the flying area being closed. On weekends, gliding zones can be activated, allowing flights up to 2300m. For activation, pilots can call specific numbers or use flight communication frequencies. During the vegetation period, landings are restricted to designated parts of the meadow. The current wind and temperature conditions can be checked by calling +41 31 511 07 14. For detailed and up-to-date information, visit the Delta Club Zürcher Oberland website at www.dczo.ch. The launch site at Alp Scheidegg faces southwest and west, with an elevation of 1200m. It is easily accessible with a 60-minute hike. The site is known for its excellent cross-country potential for both hang gliders and paragliders. Popular routes include Scheidegg to Amden and back, approximately 40 km, and longer routes extending to Churfirsten and beyond. Pilots should be aware of the different flight zones and their respective altitude limits. For example, directly above the launch site, the maximum altitude is 1700m. The area is ideal for cross-country flights, with routes that start in the hilly landscape of the Zurich Oberland and extend in various directions. Soaring conditions at Scheidegg can be rewarding, but pilots must act decisively to catch the first thermals. Waiting too long for better conditions can result in landing prematurely. For hang gliders, the last chance to catch a thermal before landing is near the ski jump hill in Gibswil. Pilots should avoid flying in northwest winds and Föhn conditions, and be cautious of the high-voltage power line near the Wasserschloss. In winter, driving up to the launch site is not allowed during sledding operations. Official landing and parking areas include the TCS parking lot in Gibswil, Wasserschloss, Hüebli, and TCS Wald. At Hüebli, do not drive or park on the meadow; turn around on the gravel area near the farmhouse. Avoid blocking the fire station exit and use the designated parking provided by the DCZO and the Wald municipality.
