Best Conditions
Description
Vernon Mountain, located in the Okanagan Valley of South Central British Columbia, Canada, is a well-regarded paragliding site. The launch area is at an elevation of 3200 feet above sea level, with the landing zone at 1400 feet. The site is suitable for both paragliding (PG) and hang gliding (HG), offering thermal and ridge flying opportunities.
The main launch direction is South/Southwest, with several takeoff options available. The primary launch is a grassy slope, ideal for novice to intermediate pilots. The site is known for its large, open landing zones, making it a safe choice for beginners and those looking to practice ridge soaring, thermal, and cross-country (XC) skills.
The site has a formal regulation, and all visiting pilots must sign a waiver and contact a local club member. HPAC insurance and a signed waiver are mandatory. The site has good cross-country potential, with flights exceeding 60 km.
The best flying conditions are typically in the spring and fall, with moderate conditions in the summer. Winter flying is not recommended. The site is accessible by a 2WD vehicle with good low gear, and detailed directions are provided to reach the launch area.
The mountain has four faces, each offering different flying conditions:
1. The south face is best in light to strong south to southwest winds, with decent thermals.
2. The west face is excellent in west or light wind conditions, especially after 2 PM.
3. The north face offers pleasant flying in north to northwest winds.
4. The east face leads to Lumby, with good XC potential.
The designated landing zone is on the south side of Highway 6, at the bottom of King Edward Mountain. Pilots should avoid landing in fields with crops or cattle and should not break fences or leave any garbage.
