Best Conditions
Description
Vejer de la Frontera, Spain offers a unique paragliding experience with its alternative takeoff site, occasionally used and rarely logged. This spot is known for its nice soaring flights, though toplanding can be challenging due to the leeside conditions.
The region is ideal for westerly winds, with a ridge approximately 500 meters long. Pilots can choose to land on the fields below or attempt a more difficult toplanding. While flying, you can enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean, which is about 10 kilometers away. Vultures often indicate the presence of embedded thermals, making some cross-country flights possible.
The area is influenced by the Azores High, often leading to easterly winds. The sea breeze system starts working from March but is not always reliable. The best conditions are usually found in prefrontal situations when the wind begins to turn south or southwest. It's important to land before the arrival of white caps on the waves, indicating stronger winds.
For optimal conditions, the weather forecast should indicate northwest winds, which combined with the sea breeze, often result in favorable west winds for hours of enjoyable soaring.
Vejer's main takeoff is located at Bar El Poniente, a popular spot with a grassy launch area and beautiful views. The secondary takeoff is further along, past an unfinished house, accessible via a dirt track. Be cautious with low-clearance vehicles.
Landing is generally straightforward, with open fields surrounding the area. The simplest option is to land near the takeoff or along the road from Vejer to Los Caños de Meca, ensuring you avoid crops and always respect landowners.
