Description
The Unternberg in Ruhpolding, Germany, offers a natural launch site for both paragliders and hang gliders. The elevation is 1372 meters with a height difference of 696 meters. This site is regularly used and offers good cross-country (XC) flying potential.
The main launch site is located at the top station of the chairlift, which can be reached by car to the valley station and then a comfortable chairlift ride. The northern launch site is well-prepared and suitable for northern winds. The southern launch site, which is more challenging, requires flying around the entire mountain to reach the landing zone.
Caution is advised when the windsock indicates side winds from the right, as this can create a dangerous rotor leading to collapses right after takeoff. In stronger winds, it is recommended to lay out your glider further down.
The primary landing zone is 'Hinterpoint-Fuchsau / Rauschberg (Boider)', typically approached from the southern launch. There are several landing zones at Unternberg, including the main landing zone in Bärngschwendt, which is spacious and has a tavern. Bärngschwendt also hosts the training slope of the Luftikus flight school. Another training slope and landing zone are located in Gstatt, managed by the Flugcenter Ruhpolding, with an additional launch site at 'Weingarten'. The Delta Club operates another landing zone at 'Boider', which also serves as the landing zone for Rauschberg.
Guest pilots are welcome, and no short packing is required for hang gliders using the Unterberg chairlift. The altitude difference is approximately 700 meters. The site is suitable for all skill levels, especially beginners, but caution is needed in easterly wind conditions as the launch site can be in the lee. The windsock at the eastern summit should be observed.
Unternberg is ideal for leisure flying with consistent updrafts along the slope, making it almost impossible to sink out. However, it is not the best choice for XC pilots due to its lower altitude compared to nearby giants like Rauschberg or Hochfelln. The mountain's shaded northern slope is less favorable for thermal development, but it is sheltered from regional winds, making it a relaxed flying spot even when conditions are rough at nearby peaks.
For those who manage to climb a few hundred meters above the chairlift station, the jump to the neighboring Rauschberg is possible, where one can catch the famous 'Rauschbergthermik' and venture into the High Tauern.
