Best Conditions
Description
The Levant site in Belgium is occasionally used, primarily as a training hill. It offers some opportunities for thermal and dynamic soaring. The best wind direction is SSE, but be cautious as S-SSE can be turbulent. NNE/NE is possible, but it's recommended to consult with local pilots.
The site is reserved for autonomous pilots who are members of the FBVL or a recognized foreign federation. Aerial liability insurance is mandatory. For more information or in case of issues, contact the club Les Ailes du Levant (Alain Grenier: 0476/26.79.80).
Ideal flying conditions include a wind orientation of SSE (160°) with wind speeds between 13 to 20 km/h.
Airspace considerations:
- Heading north or NNE, you must stop any cross-country ambitions quickly due to the EBR22 CASTEAU zone 1.5 km away, where overflight is prohibited.
- Heading NNO or NW, the Charleroi TMA is 2 km north, limiting the ceiling to 2500 ft MSL (762 m). Additionally, the CTR of Chièvres is 6.8 km away.
Takeoff is on grass. Access is via a path from the large chimney (old buildings) leading to the back of the terril, a 10-minute walk. The area is shaded. Special thanks to the landowners, W. Dréau for the terril and M. Deligne for the landing area in his meadows.
Be cautious of:
- Holes caused by ground subsidence in the takeoff area. The red schist can be very hot, releasing sulfur-based acidic vapors, which can damage wings.
- A large metal pole in the middle of the takeoff area.
- The negative slope a few meters behind the takeoff area, which can be dangerous if you are pushed back with your wing.
- Thorny bushes (brambles) on the slope.
Landing:
The official landing area is in a fenced meadow at the foot of the terril. Ensure there are no horses grazing nearby, as they are generally not too frightened by the wings. The meadow's owner, M. Michel Deligne, also owns a ranch (http://www.westernrando.be/), and requests that pilots land away from the horses and avoid damaging the fences.
Directions:
From the Bxl-Mons highway (exit Jemappes), take the second exit on the ramp (N5) towards N544 (Cuesmes, Frameries). At the roundabout, head towards Cuesmes, Mons. In Cuesmes, turn left around the miner's lamp and continue straight for about 2 km (passing under a bridge). At the Courtheoux store, turn left and continue straight (hidden street). Either go straight to the large chimney (car parking) or turn right, pass the tunnel, go 200 m, and the landing area is on the left.
Facilities:
There is a refreshment stand near the landing area (buildings of Mr. Dreau).
Be aware:
- The landing area has become very turbulent due to a row of trees growing in front of it along the Ravel. If in doubt, land in the fields further south, taking care not to damage the crops.
Restrictions:
Respect the crops and fences. Use the gates to exit the meadows and remember to close them behind you.
