Located in Vorarlberg, Austria, the paragliding site known as 'Staufen' offers a reliable thermal source and scenic afternoon flights, even during winter. Often mistakenly referred to as 'Schuttannen,' this site is regularly used and provides opportunities for soaring and some cross-country flying. To reach the launch site, you can take a bus or drive to the Skilift Schuttannen. The bus runs hourly until 18:00, and driving from the landing zone takes about 20 minutes. Once there, a 15-minute walk is required to reach the southwest-facing launch point, which is always in the lee. Flying is typically done in west to north-northeast wind conditions, starting from 17:00 in summer or earlier in autumn. Before these times, the conditions are usually too turbulent and dangerous due to the lee-side launch. Two windsocks at the launch site help indicate wind direction. After takeoff, pilots should fly right around the ridge and aim to gain altitude below the Staufen summit cross. Evening flights, such as the one starting at 19:15, often find usable thermals above the Karren and can last up to an hour in smooth summer air. Landing is done on sports fields or a large meadow next to small high-rise buildings. A windsock on the high fence of the football field assists with landing, which requires precise maneuvering due to the relatively small landing area.
