Description
The paragliding site at Schrot, located near Studen in Switzerland, offers an easy launch at an altitude of 1392 meters. This site is regularly used for walk & fly, soaring, and even cross-country (XC) flights.
To reach the starting point, park your car at the shooting range in Studen. The hike begins directly from the shooting range into the forest, following a path with several switchbacks until you reach a meadow. Continue along the forest edge until you arrive at Schrot. The entire hike takes about 50 minutes for a reasonably fit person. Note that there is a small fee of 2 Swiss Francs for takeoff and landing, which can be deposited in a box at the stall near Schrot.
Driving to Schrot is prohibited as it is a private road. However, the Skyjam flight school, which conducts training at the site, has permission to drive there, providing an alternative for those who prefer not to hike.
The launch site faces north and is a large, flat, moderately steep meadow. The coordinates are 8.84053188, 47.05946163, and it takes about 75 minutes to reach from the village of Schrott via Unter Schrott to Ober Schrott.
Schrot is situated southwest of Studen (SZ), near Unteriberg and close to Sihlsee. The ascent is rewarded with excellent opportunities for both short and long-distance flights. In valley wind conditions, you can soar at Schrot or head to the north face of Diethelm to gain altitude. If done correctly, you can surpass Diethelm (>2100m) and continue towards Hoch-Ybrig, where you can climb even higher and choose to fly towards Mythen or Muotathal.
In light east wind conditions, you can still launch, but be aware of potential convergence from Fläschli Höchi, which can cause strong lift either in the valley or directly in front of the launch site. Avoid flying towards Diethelm in these conditions as it will be in the lee.
The area is generally easy and suitable for beginners. However, east wind conditions can cause turbulence at launch, which can be managed with an active flying style. Soaring at Schrot is only effective with very strong valley winds due to the short length of the slope. Otherwise, head immediately towards the north face of Diethelm to gain altitude.
