The main launch site is located at an altitude of 2940 meters and is accessible via the Schilthornbahn cable car from Stechelberg. From the top station, it's a short 30-meter walk to the launch area. The site offers two different launch directions: East and South.
For the East launch, you can lay out your wing directly after the last cable car mast. The terrain here is rocky and narrow, with cliffs on the right and the cable on the left. The South launch, located behind the terrace, is small, short, and also rocky. Both launch sites are situated on a peak, where turbulence around the summit is common. Conditions tend to be calmer during autumn. Thermals can be accessed from both the South and East sides of the peak. Usage of the site is free, and it is managed by the Schilthornbahn.
The recommended launch time is between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, with thermals starting around 10:00 AM. Due to the short launch path and high altitude, significant flying experience and secure launch techniques are essential. The site is known for its beautiful autumn flights.
The Schilthorn offers not only a fantastic view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, along with 200 other Alpine peaks, but also a significant altitude difference of over 2000 meters on each flight. It is also famous for being a filming location for the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." The coordinates even start with 007!
This site is ideal for pilots aiming for higher goals and is suitable for cross-country flights thanks to good thermals. While the launch sites are technically rocky and alpine, they are not particularly difficult under good conditions. The multiple launch directions provide almost ideal spots, but a secure launch technique and alpine experience are necessary. Pilots who fly here typically have experience with other high-altitude sites in the area and are familiar with strong valley winds.
