Description

Located in Tuscany, Italy, this paragliding site is best suited for experienced pilots. The takeoff altitude is 1172 meters, and the site offers multiple takeoff options. Soaring and small cross-country flights are possible, with toplanding being a normal practice here. For the most convenient approach to the landing zone, follow the state road n. 12 from Lucca, pass Bagni di Lucca, and continue along the Lima valley. Turn off towards San Cassiano. The landing area is near the village cemetery, just before the small square with parking after the local bar. The landing is technical, often featuring significant thermal activity, and should not be underestimated. The landing altitude is 500 meters above sea level, with GPS coordinates N 44°03'44.1" E 010°36'54.2". To reach the takeoff area, return to the bar and parking area, then continue uphill on the paved road. At the first junction, take the left turn, and at the second junction where the road becomes unpaved, follow the sign for Pratofiorito. Continue along this road until you reach a small rest area. From there, a 15-minute walk along a flat path leads to the grassy takeoff area at an altitude of 1130 meters above sea level. The takeoff faces South/West-West, and it is possible to take off with moderate North/West winds. However, it is dangerous with winds from the East or North-East. The takeoff area is moderately steep grass with some rocks, requiring good control of the wing before launch. Typically, a strong thermal breeze allows for a safe forward launch, while in the evening, the breeze subsides, making a frontal launch possible. Top landing is not very technical and can be done on the wide grassy saddle crossed to reach the takeoff. Alternatively, with a bit more effort, landing near the rest area is also possible. The official landing zone is near the cemetery of San Cassiano. This landing is very technical and should not be underestimated. It is generally easier to perform a top landing on the wide grassy saddle. Flight characteristics include the potential for dynamic soaring near the rocky ridges of Monte Pratofiorito, though this can be turbulent due to the terrain. Thermal updrafts can help pilots reach Monte Mosca, from where they can cross the Orrido di Botri and connect with the Apennines, including the Rondinaio and Giovo mountains. There are numerous cross-country possibilities along the northern Apennine chain, with classic out-and-return flights towards San Pellegrino and Passo delle Radici. In case of a forced landing, the Apennines are sparsely populated and lack public transport, so it is advisable to aim for the Garfagnana valley floor for safer landing options.
