Description
Obersaxen, located above the Rhine Valley between Ilanz and Trun, offers a paragliding experience comparable to the popular Flims area but with fewer visitors. The launch site is at an elevation of 2040 meters and is accessible via a chairlift from Vella to Hitzeggen or directly to Mundaun with the Cuolm Sura - Mundaun chairlift. The launch area is a flat meadow near the mountain station.
For detailed operating times of the lifts, visit: [Bergbahnen Obersaxen Operating Times](http://www.obersaxen.ch/Betriebszeiten_Bergbahnen.796.0.html).
The site offers panoramic flights with options to launch in various directions: WNW, NW, and N. The launch in the direction of SO-SW is considered medium difficulty due to the steep slope, while SW-NW is easier, especially in winter. Winter launches can be done with skis or snowboards, and the start area is near the ski piste.
Flight options include:
- North to the Valata valley station
- North to the Cuolm Sura intermediate station (1616m)
- North into the Rhine Valley (Rueun)
- South into Val Lumnezia (Vella 1244m; Triel 1600m)
Landing can be done on any mowed meadow. In winter, landing is possible directly above the valley station or on the parking lot if it's free. In challenging wind conditions, landing north or east of the village towards Ilanz is feasible.
The area is in the LS-D10 Tavanas danger zone (Brigels: Flab shooting area). For safety information, check frequency 135.475 and 3950/GND. Always consult KOSIF before flying.
For more information on the cable cars and a panoramic map of the usual launch sites, visit: [Bergbahnen Obersaxen](http://www.obersaxen-mundaun.ch/NEWS.82.0.html).
Soaring conditions are ideal for thermal flights towards the south, with various ridges to the north where thermal bubbles can form.
For a meeting point, consider the Piz Mundaun summit restaurant or the restaurant at the valley station.
