Description
Savognin, located in the Surses region, is a charming destination for paragliding enthusiasts. The main take-off point is at Somtgant, accessible via a chairlift from Savognin. From the top, it's a 90-minute hike to the launch site, which is a moderately steep meadow at an altitude of 2600 meters. The launch window faces northeast and is considered of medium difficulty.
In winter, the launch is from the edge of a blue ski slope, making it easy to start. The chairlift operates up to 2670 meters in winter and up to 2112 meters in summer. The area is ideal for flights during Bise winds, but should be avoided during Föhn conditions.
Flights can be initiated either eastwards or northwards from Somtgant or Piz Martegnas. In winter, pilots typically follow the ski slope from Piz Martegnas to Somtgant, often crossing the lift at high altitude. Light south winds combined with thermal activity can allow for soaring on the south side.
Landing should be done on mowed meadows during the vegetation period. Suitable landing spots include the area southwest of Hotel Danilo or, in more turbulent weather, the valley floor south of the village near the tennis court, where a windsock is present. In winter, land next to the valley station at the designated landing spot marked on the panoramic map.
For more details, visit the Savognin Bergbahnen website, which also provides a panoramic map with marked take-off and landing sites. For paragliding services, contact Bananas-Paragliding-Taxi in Savognin.
