Description
Located in Oregon, USA, this paragliding site offers a launch elevation of 1873 meters with a height difference of 380 meters. The main takeoff area is the 'SE Bowl,' which faces southeast and sits at 6100 feet. This site is regularly used and offers good cross-country flying potential.
The drive to the bottom for pilot pickup can be challenging, so consider hiking back up to your car after flying. Make sure to bring water. The site is best flown in southeast winds ranging from 0 to 8 mph, as it is primarily a thermaling site with light and variable winds.
There are a few trees on the slope around the launch area, but the landing zone is a wide-open clearing in the desert with no obstacles. For parking, pull out on the side of the road but avoid getting too close to the edge, as the soft sand can cause even 4x4 vehicles to get stuck.
To reach the SE Bowl, take Highway 20 East out of Bend for about 24 miles until you reach the Millican Valley. Just after passing the old deserted Millican Store on the right, turn right onto Pine Mountain Road. Follow the signs for the Pine Mountain Observatory and continue past it. Keep to the left at any forks in the road. At a sharp right turn overlooking the desert floor, pull over and park. Locate a faint trail and walk left of the road towards the east across the hill until you reach the cleared launch area.
