Description
Packsaddle Mountain, located in the Texas Hill Country near Kingsland, is a unique flying site known for being the only hang gliding foot launch in Texas. The site includes both a launch and landing zone situated on private property, requiring pilots to obtain a personal pass and a parking pass. Membership with the Austin Free Flight Association (AFFA) is mandatory for flying here. Non-Texas residents can purchase a day pass, while Texas residents must acquire an annual pass.
The site features two launches: the south-facing launch, which requires an H2/P2 rating, and the north-facing launch, which requires an H3/P3 rating. First mountain flights are permitted under the supervision of a USHPA instructor. The site is closed during deer hunting season from late October through mid-January.
Radio frequencies for ridge soaring are set at 151.925 MHz. The site is managed by Mark Carlson, who can be contacted at packadmin@austinfreeflight.org. Pilots are advised not to contact the landowners directly.
For more information, visit the Austin Free Flight Association's website: http://64.130.29.6/TexasFlying.htm
Takeoff is at 2,015 feet MSL (387 feet AGL). The south launch is suitable for ESE winds and allows both foot launch and ramp launch. The north launch is designed for NW winds and uses a ramp.
