Description
At an altitude of 2048 meters with a height difference of 1310 meters, this site is frequently used and offers excellent cross-country (XC) flying opportunities. There are two take-off spots facing east, located next to each other. The main take-off spot is in front of the mountain rescue hut, while the secondary one is about 70 meters further south.
This is the primary take-off area, but there are several other take-off options available. It's recommended to get local information on-site.
Region: Bavaria, Germany. Nearby flights can be viewed [2586]. The site record is 159.8 km. For more information, visit: [Drachen und Gleitschirmflieger](http://www.drachen-und-gleitschirmflieger.de).
The Osterfelderkopf, accessible via the Alpspitzbahn, offers a high alpine flying experience. At 2050 meters, the north-facing take-off spot is equipped with a ramp for hang gliders. The landing zone is located on the road to the Alpspitzbahn parking lot, marked by a large windsock on a hay barn. Be aware of strong valley winds and turbulence behind the creek west of the landing area.
For hang gliders, this site is ideal for long flights in dynamic valley winds. Cross-country pilots can enjoy optimal routes from this mountain, heading northeast towards Austria's Karwendel, Brauneck, or Wallberg, or northwest to Tegelberg. The first flights to Switzerland from this site were recorded in 1997.
Paragliders also find this site excellent for both scenic morning flights and challenging cross-country flights. Paragliders take off to the right of the ramp in the meadow depression or next to the mountain rescue hut facing east.
Safety Warnings:
- Use the north take-off only when the wind is clearly and sufficiently strong from the front.
- Avoid flying too low towards the south (Wetterstein/Reintal) due to limited landing options and strong turbulence.
- Always fly on the north side of the Osterfelder area.
- Watch out for avalanche control cables when thermalling near the Alpspitze.
- Expect strong valley winds at the landing zone from midday onwards. Do not approach the landing zone behind the earth wall (creek) with a paraglider due to severe turbulence.
- During east wind conditions, strong valley winds can persist until late afternoon.
