Description
Hammelburg, Germany
Elevation: 317 m, Height Difference: 135 m
This site is frequently used and offers a 25-minute walk & fly experience. It is suitable for good cross-country (XC) flights, especially with southeastern winds. Note that guest flying is prohibited on weekends and public holidays. Do not drive your own car to the take-off area. Guest parking is available exclusively in the residential area "Am Rod." Before flying, contact the local club.
To preserve the flying site, which is near the core zone of a biosphere reserve, pilots must follow specific rules. Due to complaints about traffic congestion in the vineyards, guest flying is banned from Friday morning to Sunday evening.
Important: Driving on landing areas and nearby bike paths is strictly prohibited. Respect cyclists and pedestrians. Violations will result in an immediate flying ban.
Due to significant complaints from residents, specific regulations at Ofenthaler Berg must be strictly followed. Guest pilots have caused issues with vehicle movements in restricted areas. Driving to the take-off site is not allowed. The city of Hammelburg has announced police checks. Paragliders must park in the "Am Rod" settlement or at the "ADAC-Platz," from where the take-off site is a 10-minute walk. Ensure not to block driveways or garages and allow normal traffic flow.
Due to high flying activity, guest flying rules must be observed. On weekends and holidays, guest flights are not allowed. In low thermal conditions, guests may face longer wait times as only a limited number of gliders can fly simultaneously. Follow the instructions of club members. After take-off, aim for the maximum possible altitude and seek alternative thermal sources on nearby hills. In close proximity to the ridge, a maximum of five paragliders and five hang gliders can fly due to the small lift band. High collision risk requires maximum attention. If necessary, land and resume the flight later. Use only the designated landing area. Paragliders need an unrestricted pilot's license, and checks will be conducted. Continued rule violations may lead to a complete ban on guest flying.
Hang gliders have an exception to drive to the take-off site but must not exceed 30 km/h. It is advisable to drive even slower as the vineyard path is used by many walkers. Form car pools if possible to reduce traffic. Do not obstruct vineyard workers; use the lower path if necessary.
The DFC Hammelburg e.V. has managed the Ofenthaler Berg flying site since 1978, with two take-off areas. It is a traditional hang gliding site, and since around 1998, paragliders have also been flying here. Due to high paraglider traffic, the airspace can become crowded, requiring all pilots to be extremely vigilant.
