Conditions Optimales
Description
This launch site is somewhat hidden and is only used in the spring to avoid damaging the grass and inconveniencing the farmer. You must ask the farmer for permission before using it.
It's best to launch before the valley wind sets in. Catching the first thermal is crucial; otherwise, you'll have to land in the Puster Valley below.
The valley wind in the Puster Valley frequently changes with the sun, blowing east in the morning and west in the afternoon. By midday, you might find yourself in Sillian or further, making the return journey difficult. Therefore, large out-and-return flights are usually done from Sillian in the opposite direction.
Above the forested hill in front of Meransen, there's often a thermal that can be a last resort before landing.
Autumn thermals provide a good alternative to the Dolomites. The cable car operates until mid-October. In high-pressure conditions with east wind, it's a 15-minute walk to Gitschhütte, where you can start better towards the east.
Reaching the landing site in Meransen without thermals requires a glide ratio of at least 7. The landing site is higher than the valley station of the cable car, so this must be considered during the flight to avoid landing in the village. A good reference point is the church steeple.
There are various cross-country possibilities. The route to Lienz is legendary. The entire valley is open to you, and sometimes you can even make a trip to the Dolomites. In the morning, you can enjoy excellent soaring conditions, and reliable thermals often build up from midday onwards.
