Located in the Jura region of Switzerland, the Obere Wengi site is a popular destination for both hang gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. The launch site is situated at an elevation of 955 meters and is rated as easy to medium in difficulty. The take-off area is a large, moderately sloped field behind the Obere Wengi farmhouse, facing southeast. This site is well-frequented and offers excellent potential for cross-country flights, with a site record of 133.3 km.
Access to the launch site is straightforward. You can drive from Matzendorf to Obere Wengi, but during the local club's bus operation season, private vehicles are not allowed to drive up to the launch site. The bus service operates even on weekdays during the season. Pilots are required to visit the mountain restaurant as a form of launch fee. The ascent to the launch site passes below the stable, and it is important to make your presence known by calling out to avoid startling the horses.
The best time to fly here is from March to the end of May, and sometimes into June. Summer conditions can often be too stable for optimal flying. The site is particularly favored for its consistent thermals around midday, which allow for significant altitude gains and impressive cross-country flights, such as routes into the Basel area.
However, pilots should be aware of the complex airspace structure. Since March 2007, the Basel TMA 'Tango' has a maximum altitude of 1700 meters ASL, with no tolerance for exceeding this limit. Compliance with local rules and regulations is crucial to maintain access to this flying site.
