Description

The Niederwiler Stierenberg is a popular paragliding site located in the Solothurn region of Switzerland. It is well-suited for pilots flying in southeast to southwest wind conditions and light Bise. The site is known for its good soaring conditions and relatively easy cross-country (XC) flying. It is part of the NW-SE route from Aarau to Neuenburg, making it a favored spot for many pilots. The take-off area is a moderately steep meadow, approximately 30 meters wide and 70 meters long, situated in a forest clearing. However, it can become very turbulent in strong winds, so caution is advised. Top landing is possible, for example, in Balmberg nearby. Guest pilots are asked to contribute a voluntary start fee to help cover maintenance and lease costs. Please deposit the amount in the provided cash box. Note that the road to Sennhaus Stierenberg must not be driven on, even if the barrier is open. For those who cannot fly, the local herdsman welcomes visitors, and the Postauto bus service departs from Oberbalmberg at 13:30, 14:50, 16:50, and 18:10 (times subject to change). To reach the take-off site, take the Postauto from Solothurn to Kurhaus Ober Balmberg, then walk approximately 30 minutes to the launch area. Balm is situated at 655 meters above sea level, about 5 km north-northeast of Solothurn, on a southeast-facing terrace at the lower Jura south slope, approximately 500 meters above the Swiss Plateau. The area around Niederwiler Stierenberg and Chamben (1,227 meters above sea level) features a basin created by the Siggern, a tributary of the Aare, with corresponding escarpments. For a rewarding experience, consider stopping at the mountain restaurant for a meal before taking off.
