Description
Monte Tamaro, located in Ticino, Switzerland, is a popular paragliding site known for its excellent thermal soaring conditions and potential for cross-country flights. The take-off point is conveniently situated right next to the mountain station, making it easily accessible.
With favorable weather conditions, Monte Tamaro is ideal for paragliding training. The ease of access makes it perfect for practicing take-offs and landings. The morning flights are particularly good due to the excellent east to southeast exposure, allowing pilots to soar early in the day. Experienced pilots can even land back at the take-off area. On a good day, you can reach the summit of Tamaro and continue towards Monte Lema.
In the afternoon, it's advisable to maintain altitude in front of the take-off and cross the valley to reach Cima di Medeglia (1260 m). The lower take-off at Cima di Medeglia, at an altitude of 850 m, often provides good thermals. In the late afternoon and evening, dynamic conditions usually prevail, allowing you to gain altitude and land at the summit of Cima di Medeglia. This site is excellent for learning to soar, but be cautious of the strengthening breeze and potential rotors at the top of the mountain.
Safety is paramount. Avoid flying in Foehn conditions (north wind), which can be irregular and dangerous. If in doubt, consult local pilots, flight schools, or Meteo Switzerland Locarno Monti. Be aware of the Locarno (Magadino) CTR to the north and the Lugano CTR to the south when flying towards Monte Lema.
The take-off area is just a short walk from the cable car station, making it convenient for pilots. In specific wind conditions, it may be better to use the take-off behind the Alpe Foppa restaurant, which is a 5-10 minute walk and offers exposure from east to north.
Note that there is a 400 m zip line near the take-off area. While it shouldn't interfere with take-offs or top landings at Laghetto, it's important to be cautious as it may not be easily visible from above.
