Description
Monte Bellavarda, standing at 2345 meters in Val Grande, offers a challenging yet rewarding hike & fly experience. This site is rarely used but provides panoramic flights that are truly breathtaking.
For takeoff, you have two main options: Vonzo and Prati della Via. The takeoff from Vonzo is at 1109 meters, while Prati della Via is at 1528 meters. Both takeoffs are on steep grassy slopes beneath the summit cross, facing south. The hike from Vonzo involves an elevation gain of 1114 meters, and from Lities, it's 1202 meters.
To reach Vonzo, follow the route Lanzo-Cantoira-Chialamberto-Vonzo. Park your car in the village square. From there, hike southeast across the meadows, passing the Ciavanis chapel at 1820 meters. Follow the red markers to a group of huts, then ascend the steep northern slope to the Paglia pass and the north-northwest ridge leading to the summit. Takeoff options are available near the Ciavanis chapel and the Paglia pass.
For Lities, take the road from Cantoira to Lities at 1143 meters. Park near the church and follow the path past several huts to the San Domenico chapel at 1772 meters. Continue along the grassy ridge, passing the lower Bellavarda huts at 1908 meters and the upper huts at 2040 meters, until you reach the summit cross. Takeoff options are available near San Domenico and the Bellavarda huts.
Landing zones include Prati della Via at 812 meters, located on the right side of the valley near the old asbestos mine, and Vonzo at 1231 meters, a large sloping meadow along the path to the Ciavanis chapel.
