Conditions Optimales
Description
Moir's Hill, located in the Warkworth region of New Zealand, is renowned as Auckland's premier cross-country paragliding site. With a take-off elevation of 980 feet above sea level and 800 feet above the landing paddock, it offers excellent conditions for cross-country flights. The site has seen numerous impressive flights, with the current record standing at 139.7 km.
Access to Moir's Hill is straightforward. From State Highway 1, 6 kilometers north of the Puhoi turn-off, turn left into Moirs Hill Road near the rest area at the end of Windy Ridge. Follow the gravel road past the transmitter tower and park near the walking gate marked with a DOC sign 'Waihunga/Moir Hill'. From there, it's a short walk to the take-off point.
Landing at Moir's Hill requires careful consideration due to the valley's wind conditions, which can differ significantly from the wind at launch. An aircraft-type landing circuit approach is recommended to determine the wind direction at the valley's bottom. Top landing is possible but challenging for hang gliders and paragliders due to tight and thermic conditions. An alternative top landing spot is available to the northeast of the transmitter tower, requiring a minimum altitude of 600 feet above take-off.
Pilots must ensure their footwear is clean to prevent the spread of Kauri dieback disease. More information on prevention can be found at [Kauri Dieback Prevention](http://www.kauridieback.co.nz/prevention).
The site operates on specific radio channels: Channels 10 and 26 for schools, and Channel 20 (476.900MHz) for other pilots.
Airspace around Moir's Hill is controlled, with a flight ceiling of 3,500 feet above launch, rising to 4,500 feet upon opening NZG152 Moir Hill. Pilots must coordinate with Air Traffic Control to open and close airspace as needed.
