Description
The Messelberg in Donzdorf, Germany, is a popular soaring site with an elevation of 686 meters and a height difference of 160 meters. It is frequently used and offers good cross-country (XC) flying opportunities for experienced pilots. The site record is an impressive 214.9 km.
The launch site at Messelberg presents more challenges than it might initially appear. There are extensive regulations and requirements to follow, which are based on the specific location of the terrain and the overarching validity of the German Air Traffic Act (LuftVG). For example, pilots must observe flight restriction sectors, and there is a limit of a maximum of 6 gliders in the air simultaneously. First-time and guest pilots require an orientation, and flights are only permitted in the presence of a club member or launch director. A radio (LPD) is mandatory. If more than the allowed number of pilots are waiting at the launch site, flight time is restricted to 30 minutes. Past violations of these rules have led to the temporary closure of the site by the airfield operator or landowner. Therefore, it is crucial to adhere to all regulations without exception to maintain access for all pilots.
Be cautious of the airfield; do not fly south of the launch site. Ensure you receive proper orientation.

When the wind is not coming directly from the west, there is a general risk of severe turbulence at the launch site (gap start). With a north component (wind direction NW), turbulence is typically found throughout the Messelberg slope area (Sector 1b and II). This poses a significant risk of collapses, especially for paragliders.
