Melchsee-Frutt, located in the canton of Obwalden near the Bernese Oberland, is a popular destination for both summer and winter sports. The take-off site at Dämpfelsmatt, situated at an altitude of 1,900 meters, is primarily used during the summer months. The launch area is a gently sloping alpine meadow, facing north to northeast, making it an ideal spot for easy take-offs.
To reach Melchsee-Frutt, you can drive to Stöckalp via Sarnen, Kerns, and Melchtal. From Stöckalp, take the gondola to Melchsee-Frutt. In the summer, there's also a toll road available, but it operates only once per hour. From the gondola station, it's a 7-minute marked footpath to the launch site.
The landing zone is typically in Stöckalp, on the meadow next to the parking lot, marked by a windsock. Be cautious of cable wires and wildlife protection areas; information is available on the notice board at the launch site.
Melchsee-Frutt offers excellent conditions for thermal flights, with possibilities for cross-country flying. You can enjoy flights into the Engelberg Valley, the Bernese Oberland (Meiringen), and the Entlebuch region (Brünig, Brienzerrothorn, Sörenberg). A well-known route is from Melchsee-Frutt over the 'Planplatten' to Sarnersee.
For those interested in combining flying with hiking, Melchsee-Frutt is a renowned hiking area in the summer and a popular ski resort in the winter. The '4-Lake Hike' in the Jochpass region is one of the most beautiful hikes in Central Switzerland, featuring stunning views of the Bernese Alps.
