Description
Helicopter Hill, standing at 1248 meters, is a lesser-used paragliding site, ideal for hike & fly enthusiasts. It offers occasional thermalling opportunities and some cross-country potential.
For more information on the hiking route, visit [Hiking Scenery](https://hikingscenery.com/helicopter-hill-lyndon-saddle-camp-saddle-circuit/) and [Canterbury Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club](https://www.chgpc.org.nz/other-sites).
Wind conditions should be light. The minimum pilot rating required is PG2 for paragliders and Advanced for hang gliders.
To access the site, turn off SH73 onto the Craigieburn Ski Field access road. Parking is available approximately 1 km from SH73, where a walking track begins. This area can accommodate 2-3 vehicles.
For take-off, follow the walking track to Lyndon Saddle, then turn left and ascend to Helicopter Hill. The climb is steep, so take your time. The take-off area is on the southeast face and offers ample space.
The designated landing zone is near SH73, close to the turn-off for the ski field road. Be cautious of the powerlines in the landing area.
Helicopter Hill is a thermic site, with thermals often triggering from take-off. If you catch a thermal, follow the same flying advice as for Cheeseman. Avoid gliding towards Lake Pearson if you are low, as SH73 passes through a gorge with no landing options.
