Description
McKenzie Creek in British Columbia, Canada, is one of the top paragliding sites in the country, offering excellent cross-country (XC) potential. The site features two launches: Upper McKenzie and Lower McKenzie. The elevation difference between the launch and landing zone (LZ) is significant, providing ample opportunity for extended flights.
The site record for McKenzie Creek stands at 136.1 km, showcasing its potential for long-distance flights. The launch areas are accessible via a rough 4x4 road, and shuttle services are available from the primary LZ.
Hazards to be aware of include the Whistler Express, a strong wind that can be difficult to detect from the launch. Look for the big white windsock on "the Dome" in front of the lower launch to gauge wind conditions. North and East winds can also create turbulent air and leeside conditions.
The launch area is a groomed gradual slope with space for over 10 gliders, though it can get crowded during peak times. The primary LZs are located along Pemberton Meadows Road, with the sports field being the main LZ and Wray’s field as an alternate. Hang gliders have specific LZ requirements and should be aware of the technical nature of the landings.
Site regulations require HPAC and WCSC memberships, which can be purchased online or via the shuttle driver. These memberships are mandatory for using the site and shuttle services.
The flying season with the best XC potential is from July to September. House thermals are located near the upper launch, and various XC routes are available, including routes to Owl Mountain, Goat Mountain, and beyond.
Hike and fly options are popular, with several trails leading to the launches. The "Cloudbase Grind" trail from the train trestle on Urdal Rd to the lower launch is well-marked. The "Middle Earth" trail connects the lower and upper launches.
Shuttle services run regularly during the main flying season, with costs ranging from $10 to $20 depending on the launch. Custom schedules can be arranged for groups of four or more pilots.
