Description

Czoło Mountain, located at an altitude of 1221 meters above sea level with a height difference of 190 meters, is a regularly used paragliding site where cross-country flights are possible. Situated directly at the Czech border, the landing zone is on Czech territory. This site is also known by various names such as Pomezni Boudy and Pomezki. The take-off area is a grassy slope at 1200 meters above sea level, positioned above Przełęcz Okraj (Okraj Pass) at the beginning of the main Karkonosze range. Local pilots consider it one of the best places for cross-country flying. To reach the take-off point, drive from Kowary to Przełęcz Okraj (Okraj Pass) and park near the PTTK tourist shelter-house. From there, it's a 20-30 minute hike up the mountain. Follow the steep blue trail for a 100-meter climb, then turn right before a wooden handrail into a path hidden among trees for an additional 50-meter climb. The effort is rewarded with stunning scenery, including views of the Śnieżnik range behind Kłodzko Valley. The ideal wind directions for launch are between 80 and 120 degrees, though experienced pilots can manage in winds from 60 to 140 degrees. The landing zone is a large meadow 650 meters below, west of Kowary Średnie. Since the landing zone is not visible from the take-off point, a reconnaissance flight is recommended for first-time visitors. Czoło Mountain is an east-facing site, making it suitable for flights before 11 a.m. to take advantage of the long day. The mountain is a good trigger for thermals, and with favorable weather conditions and proper wind direction, pilots can fly across the Karkonosze range and beyond. Some pilots choose to fly northwest towards Zgorzelec, while others head towards Saxon Switzerland, flying over Liberec in the Czech Republic. In southerly winds, gaining enough altitude to fly over Wołowa Góra, Kowary, and the Rudawy Janowickie Mountains towards Jeżów Sudecki, Wleń, or Bolesławiec is advisable. In northerly winds, pilots with smaller glide ratio wings should look for lifts along a ridge descending northeast towards the landing fields, ensuring they maintain enough altitude as they will be flying into the wind.
