Description
The Kobern-Gondorf paragliding site in Germany offers a launch height of 245 meters and a height difference of 171 meters. This site is regularly used for soaring, though cross-country flights are rare. There is a possibility for top landing on a small plateau to the right below the launch site.

Weather conditions can be tricky to predict, but when favorable, the experience is highly rewarding.
Special Notes: This site is ideal for Walk and Fly. Note that driving up to Rosenberg is prohibited. Parking is only allowed in the Kobern-Gondorf or Wolken area.
The launch site is a meadow on the plateau above the northeastern end of Kobern-Gondorf, equipped with a windsock and an information board. There is almost always a light crosswind at the launch. Do not launch if the windsock indicates wind from the Hohensteinbachtal direction.
Directions:
- By car: Take the A61 to the Koblenz-Dieblich exit. Follow the B411 towards Dieblich/Koblenz. After a few kilometers, turn right towards Dieblich and follow the K69 downhill to the Mosel. Turn left onto the B49 along the Mosel and cross the bridge. Immediately after crossing, turn right onto the B416 and take the next right. After passing under the B416 and the railway line, turn right onto Moselweg. Follow the signs to the parking area, which is directly at the landing site.
From the landing site to the launch site:
- On foot: Leave the landing site at the northern end along Hohensteinsbach. After crossing the railway line, turn right onto Moselweg and continue to Lennigstraße. Follow Lennigstraße uphill and turn right onto Tazelwurmweg, which leads to the launch site.
The launch site was cleared and prepared by around 30 members of the Drachen- und Gleitschirmfliegerfreunde Rhein-Mosel-Lahn (RML) e.V. on January 29, 2011. The official approval has been granted for one year. Please adhere to the restrictions and guidelines to maintain good relations with local authorities and ensure continued use of the site.
The Rosenberg offers thermal flying opportunities with southern wind directions. Soaring is limited due to the terrain. Vehicles are not allowed to park on the Rosenberg. Equipment can be driven up to the end of the asphalt road for unloading but must be parked at the Moselvorgelände (landing site) afterward. Form carpool groups and ensure at least one person walks up the mountain (approximately 30-40 minutes).
Landing must occur at least half an hour before sunset. The landing site is quite far from the launch site with no intermediate landing options. Plan your landing approach early, crossing the railway and B416 with sufficient altitude (at least 50 meters). Avoid flying over the town of Kobern during the landing approach.
If the landing site is not reachable due to headwinds, consider crossing the Mosel and landing at the Moselvorgelände in Dieblich. The Hohesteinsbachtal should only be flown over with sufficient altitude to ensure a landing on the plateau is possible. The valley has no landing options and several power lines.
Walk and Fly:
Starting point: Parking at the landing site. It's best to warm up before flying. From the landing site, head through the underpass under the B416 and railway, then follow the path towards the Hohesteinsbachtal and up the mountain. A planned footpath, the 'Tatzelwurmweg,' is under development and will lead directly to the launch site. Avoid walking through the vineyards.
A shorter walk (or bike ride) without a significant climb is possible from Wolken, which is a good alternative for pilots coming from Koblenz. However, ensure you can top land if conditions allow, or you'll have to walk back up from the Mosel.
Soaring conditions are limited due to the terrain. The southeast flank quickly leads into the traffic pattern of Winningen Airport.
Meeting Point: Best at the parking area near the landing site. There are also plenty of pubs in Kobern.
Accommodation: A motorhome parking area is 500 meters from the landing site, offering water and waste disposal but no electricity.

- By car: Autobahn A48, exit Ochtendung/Kobern-Gondorf, approximately 5 km to Kobern. The parking area at the Mosel is signposted. Alternatively, take the Moseluferstraße B416, about 15 km from Koblenz.
