Description
Carr's Lookout, situated at an altitude of 1093 meters, is a lesser-known paragliding site in Australia, located about 15 kilometers east of Killarney Town, right on the border between New South Wales and Queensland. The site faces east to northeast and is owned by Simon Bolitho, a local farmer who has been a long-time supporter of paragliding in the area.
The launch area at Carr's Lookout is high and backed by a high plateau, making it challenging to head over the back. Pilots typically head towards Urbanville or Woodenbong from this site. Be cautious of the power line running down the cliff to the east of the launch, which can be difficult to see in the late afternoon or when flying low near the cliffs. The cliffs below the launch can generate strong thermals.
Directions to Carr's Lookout:
- From Boonah: Just before the Carr's Lookout parking area and the café, there are two gates on your left. The first gate is the one you need to go through.
- From Warwick/Killarney: In Killarney, turn right at the police station/Warwick Credit Union crossroads, pass The Tucker Shop on your left, then continue out of town and take a left at the signpost for Queen Mary Falls. Pass the falls car parking area and continue for a few more kilometers until you reach Carr's Lookout on your left. There is a café just before the lookout with great views.
To access the launch area from the lookout platform, continue on the road down the hill, past an old gate on your right, until you reach the next gate on your right. Leave this gate as you find it and continue up the grassy hill on the tracks (avoid this if the ground is wet) until you reach the telecommunication tower, where you can park your car. The landowner, Simon, is very friendly and may come up to chat if he sees you there. Please respect his property.
