Description
The Graveyard site, located between Kilcunda and Cape Patterson in the Phillip Island area of Australia, is suitable for student-rated pilots and above. This coastal dune site offers soaring opportunities, especially when the tide is out, making it a good spot for learners.
Launching from the disused railway embankment within the coastal reserve near Kilcunda has been temporarily prohibited by Parks Victoria and VHPA since June 2009. In lighter winds, the preferred takeoff for hang gliders is from the dune on the west side of the path leading to the beach. The embankment takeoff further west around the rocky point is low and only suitable for stronger winds.
The dune face at the Graveyard is broken and uneven further east, but there is a good high soarable dune face about 400 meters long at the Graveyard takeoff. In winds of around 15 knots, it is highly soarable. However, caution is advised as the site has been dangerous in light winds.
The takeoff area at the Graveyard is directly above a popular surf fishing spot, so be mindful of people and fishing equipment on the beach when landing. The launch area has a limited takeoff run and has become overgrown, posing a risk of snagging the hang glider control bar. Paraglider, student, and novice pilots should consider walking about 150 meters east along the beach to launch from less overgrown, though lower, dunes.
There is very little beach at low tide, and pilots should be careful not to catch a wingtip in the face of the dunes when scratching in light winds.
Launch from the old railway embankment east of the township and west of the graveyard, or from the dunes east of the graveyard (a 100-meter walk in). For detailed location, refer to Vicroads Map 95 J10.
