Flying is possible both in summer and winter (in winter, Hochjoch is the only approved launch site).
Launch orientation: Southwest (even if Google shows differently). Suitable for winds from South, Southwest, West, Northwest. Best with southern winds.
Only for paragliding. Suitable for tandem flights in thermal conditions.
Steep, uneven, worn alpine meadow with rocks. Caution: very little space for aborting the launch - risk of injury!
In winter, snow covers most of the dangerous avalanche grids, making the terrain appear like a gentle slope; launching from the ski slope is not permitted.
In summer, launching is also possible from the piste or Wormser Hütte.
Access: First take the Kapell (Hochjochbahn or Zamangbahn), then the chairlift to 'Sennigrat'. The launch site is located inward along the ridge on the hiking trail to Wormser Hütte.
Flying at Hochjoch is possible year-round. Usable thermals often appear early in the spring. Long-distance flights are common from May to July. In summer, the often strong valley wind must be considered.
Flight
Hochjoch offers everything from calm morning flights to cross-country launches and strong thermals. Launching can be done from Kapell or Sennigrat. The landing site near the valley station is acceptable but in the lee of the houses.
The flying area is clearly demanding.
Difficulty
Always study the weather conditions as part of your usual flight preparation. Approaching fronts and thunderstorms can quickly make conditions challenging. Typical foehn area!
The flying area is known for strong valley winds in midsummer and significant turbulence near the ground.
